Mary’s story is told in Luke 1:26-56; 2:1-7, 21-40

Mary, the Mother of Jesus: A Woman of Faith and Courage

When we think of important people in the Bible, Mary—Jesus’ mother—often comes to mind. She wasn’t famous, powerful, or wealthy. She was a young girl living in a small town, yet God chose her for a very special purpose: to be the mother of Jesus, the Savior of the world.

A Humble Beginning

Mary lived in a town called Nazareth. She was engaged to a man named Joseph, who worked as a carpenter. Mary was known for being faithful to God and living a simple, honest life.

One day, her quiet life changed forever.

A Visit from an Angel

The angel Gabriel appeared to Mary with a surprising message: she would give birth to a child—even though she wasn’t married yet—and her child would be called the Son of God.

Mary was confused and a little afraid. But instead of saying “no,” she said something amazing: “I am the Lord’s servant. May your word to me be fulfilled.” (Luke 1:38)

That moment shows Mary’s deep trust in God, even when His plan didn’t make complete sense.

A Journey of Faith

Mary soon visited her relative Elizabeth, who was also expecting a miracle baby—John the Baptist. During that visit, Mary sang a beautiful song of praise to God (known today as the “Magnificat”), thanking Him for His goodness and power.

Later, Mary gave birth to Jesus in Bethlehem. It wasn’t in a hospital or even a regular house—just a stable with animals. Still, she welcomed her baby with love, knowing this child was special.

Mary and Joseph took Jesus to the temple, where an elderly man named Simeon told them that Jesus would be a light to the world, but that Mary would also face pain because of Him.

Life with Jesus

As Jesus grew up, Mary was there—watching, learning, and supporting Him. At a wedding in Cana, she encouraged Jesus to help when the hosts ran out of wine. That led to His first miracle.

But there were also hard times. Sometimes, Mary didn’t fully understand Jesus’ mission. And when He was arrested and nailed to a cross, Mary stood nearby, heartbroken. Still, she remained faithful and didn’t walk away.

After the Resurrection

After Jesus rose from the dead and returned to heaven, Mary stayed close to His followers. In Acts 1:14, we see her with the early church, praying and waiting for what God would do next. Her faith didn’t end after Jesus’ death—it continued.

What We Can Learn from Mary

Mary’s story teaches us a lot:

  • Faith – She trusted God even when life was uncertain.
  • Humility – She didn’t seek attention but was willing to serve.
  • Courage – She faced fear, pain, and sorrow with strength.
  • Obedience – She said “yes” to God without knowing all the details.

Mary may have lived over 2,000 years ago, but her example still speaks to us today. She reminds us that God can use anyone who is willing to trust Him and say “yes” to His plan.
