Jethro: The Wise Father-in-Law

(story told in Exodus 2:15-3:1; 18:1-27)

Jethro was a priest of Midian and the father of Zipporah, who became Moses’ wife. When Moses fled Egypt after defending a Hebrew slave, he came to Midian and helped Jethro’s daughters draw water for their flocks. Impressed by Moses’ kindness, Jethro welcomed him into his home and gave him Zipporah in marriage. Moses stayed with Jethro, working as a shepherd and caring for his family. During this time, God called Moses from the burning bush to return to Egypt and lead His people out of slavery.

After the Israelites escaped from Egypt, Jethro heard of all that God had done for Moses and the people. He brought Zipporah and Moses’ sons to meet him in the wilderness. When they reunited, Moses told Jethro about the plagues, the parting of the Red Sea, and how God had delivered Israel. Jethro rejoiced, offered sacrifices to God, and praised the Lord for His power and mercy.

The next day, Jethro observed Moses judging the people from morning until evening. Seeing how overwhelmed Moses was, Jethro wisely advised him to delegate responsibilities. He suggested that Moses choose capable, trustworthy men to handle smaller disputes while Moses focused on the most important matters.

Moses listened to his father-in-law’s advice and followed it, greatly improving the leadership of the people. Jethro’s practical wisdom helped establish a fair and organized system for Israel’s community life.

Jethro’s story reminds us that godly wisdom can come through humble counsel and caring relationships. His encouragement strengthened Moses and showed that true leadership often means knowing when to share the load.
