Gehazi’s story is told in 2 Kings 4:11-8:6

Gehazi: A Lesson in Greed and Integrity

Some people in the Bible show us what to do. Others show us what not to do. Gehazi, the servant of the prophet Elisha, is a character whose story is a warning about what happens when we let greed and dishonesty take over our hearts.

He had the amazing opportunity to work closely with one of God’s great prophets, but a poor decision changed his life forever. Gehazi’s story reminds us how important it is to choose honesty and contentment, even when no one else is watching.

A Trusted Servant with a Front-Row Seat

Gehazi wasn’t just any servant—he worked with Elisha, the man God used to do powerful miracles. Gehazi likely witnessed amazing things: people healed, food multiplied, and even the dead brought back to life. He had a close-up view of God’s power in action.

But having a front-row seat to God’s work doesn’t guarantee a faithful heart. As we’ll see, Gehazi let something dangerous take root inside him—greed.

Naaman’s Healing and Elisha’s Refusal

In 2 Kings 5, a powerful commander named Naaman came to Elisha to be healed from leprosy, a serious skin disease. Naaman followed Elisha’s instructions and was healed after dipping in the Jordan River seven times.

Overwhelmed with gratitude, Naaman tried to give Elisha gifts to thank him. But Elisha refused to accept anything, making it clear that God’s healing is not something that can be bought. It was a gift of grace—not a business deal.

Gehazi’s Secret Plan

Gehazi didn’t agree with Elisha’s decision. He saw an opportunity to get something for himself. So, after Naaman had left, Gehazi ran after him, made up a story, and asked for silver and clothes in Elisha’s name. Naaman, thinking it was a genuine request, gladly gave the gifts.

When Gehazi returned, he tried to hide what he had done. But Elisha, through God’s wisdom, knew exactly what had happened.

The Consequences

Elisha confronted Gehazi and asked, “Was not my spirit with you when the man got down from his chariot to meet you?” (2 Kings 5:26). Gehazi’s lie was exposed.

Because of his greed and dishonesty, Elisha declared that Naaman’s leprosy would now cling to Gehazi and his descendants. In one moment, Gehazi lost his health, his position, and his future—all because he let greed control his choices.

What We Can Learn from Gehazi’s Story

Gehazi’s story may be sad, but it teaches us some very important lessons:

1. Greed can destroy a good future.

Gehazi had a bright future serving a godly man and witnessing miracles. But his desire for wealth led him down a dangerous path.

2. Honesty matters.

Even when no one is watching, the truth always comes to light. God sees everything.

3. Serving God is a privilege.

Gehazi was in a position of trust. Instead of being faithful, he tried to take advantage of the situation for personal gain.

4. God’s gifts aren’t for sale.

Elisha made it clear that God’s blessings aren’t something we can earn or pay for. They are given freely, by His grace.

Final Thoughts

Gehazi started out with great promise. But one bad decision, fueled by greed and lies, changed the direction of his life. His story is a warning, but also a reminder: what’s in our hearts matters.

We may not be chasing after silver or clothes like Gehazi, but we all face choices every day. Will we choose honesty over shortcuts? Contentment over greed? Obedience over selfishness?

Let’s be people who serve with integrity and trust God to provide what we need.
