Gehazi

*Gehazi’s story is told in 2 Kings 4:11-8:6

Who is Gehazi?

  • Gehazi was a servant of the prophet Elisha. His name means “valley of vision,” which is intriguing given the direction his life would take. Gehazi served as a messenger and aide to Elisha, witnessing the remarkable miracles performed by his master.

Strengths and Accomplishments

  • Loyalty and Dedication: Gehazi’s commitment to serving Elisha is evident in his role as a faithful servant. He stood by Elisha through various challenges and tasks.
  • Witness to Miracles: Gehazi had the privilege of witnessing awe-inspiring miracles like the healing of Naaman’s leprosy (2 Kings 5:1-14).

Weaknesses and Mistakes

  • Greed and Deception: Gehazi’s story takes a tragic turn when he gives in to his greed. After Naaman is miraculously healed, Elisha refuses the gifts offered in gratitude. However, Gehazi secretly chases after Naaman and lies to obtain those very gifts (2 Kings 5:20-27).
  • Consequences: Elisha uncovers Gehazi’s deceit and pronounces a severe punishment on him and his descendants. Gehazi is struck with Naaman’s leprosy, a visual representation of the consequences of his actions.

Lessons from Gehazi’s Life

  • Integrity Over Desire: Gehazi’s downfall serves as a reminder that integrity should always trump our desires for personal gain. His mistake highlights the danger of allowing our wants to cloud our judgment.
  • Accountability: Gehazi’s actions were not hidden from Elisha, showing that we are accountable for our choices, even if they remain unseen by others. Transparency and honesty are paramount.

V. Key Verses (NIV)

  • 2 Kings 5:25-27 – “But Elisha said to him, ‘My heart rejoiced when he went down to meet you! Have I not gone with you in spirit?’ … Naaman’s leprosy will cling to you and to your descendants forever.’ Then Gehazi went from Elisha’s presence and his skin was leprous—it had become as white as snow.”
