(story told in Luke 1:5-80)
Elizabeth was the wife of Zechariah, a priest, and a relative of Mary, the mother of Jesus. She was known for her faithfulness and devotion to God. Though she and Zechariah were righteous and served the Lord faithfully, they had no children and were well past the age of having them. Still, Elizabeth continued to trust in God’s goodness, even in years of disappointment and waiting.
One day, while Zechariah was serving in the temple, an angel appeared to him and announced that Elizabeth would have a son. This child would be special—set apart by God to prepare the way for the coming Messiah. When Elizabeth became pregnant, she was filled with joy and gratitude, saying, “The Lord has done this for me. He has shown His favor and taken away my disgrace among the people.”
Months later, Elizabeth received a visit from her young relative Mary, who had just learned that she would give birth to Jesus. When Mary greeted her, the baby in Elizabeth’s womb leaped for joy, and Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit. She blessed Mary, recognizing her as the mother of the Lord, and praised God for His marvelous plan.
When Elizabeth’s son was born, family and friends assumed he would be named after his father. But Elizabeth firmly said, “No, he is to be called John,” just as the angel had instructed. Her obedience confirmed her faith and trust in God’s promise.
Elizabeth’s story is one of patience, joy, and faith. She teaches us that God’s timing is perfect and that His promises come true in ways that fill the waiting heart with wonder. Through her quiet faith, Elizabeth became part of God’s great story of salvation.
