3 John: Walking in Truth and Hospitality

Support Those Who Serve Christ (3 John 1:1–15)

In 3 John, the apostle John writes a personal letter to a believer named Gaius. John praises Gaius for his strong faith and for living in a way that honors God. He is especially thankful that Gaius walks in the truth—not only believing it, but showing it through his actions. This brings John great joy as a spiritual leader.

One of the main things Gaius is doing well is showing hospitality to traveling missionaries. These servants of Christ depend on the help of fellow believers as they share the gospel. By welcoming them and providing for their needs, Gaius becomes a partner in their ministry. John encourages him to continue supporting such workers, because helping them is helping God’s mission.

However, John also mentions a man named Diotrephes, who refused to welcome these missionaries. Worse, he tried to stop others from helping them and even spread harmful words. John plans to address this behavior because it does not reflect the love and truth of Jesus.

John encourages Gaius to imitate what is good, not what is evil. Those who do good show that they belong to God. Those who oppose the truth reveal a heart far from Him. Another believer, Demetrius, is given as a positive example—someone respected for his honesty and faithfulness.

The letter ends with John’s hope to visit Gaius soon so they can talk face-to-face. He sends a warm greeting and blessings of peace, showing the close family bond shared by believers. 3 John teaches that Christians should support those who serve Christ and remain committed to doing good. Our love in action helps spread the gospel and brings glory to God.
