(story told in Luke 1:26-56; 2:1-7, 21-40)
Mary was a young woman from the small town of Nazareth when her life was forever changed by a message from heaven. One day, the angel Gabriel appeared to her and said, “You will conceive and give birth to a son, and you are to call Him Jesus.” The angel told her that this child would be the Son of God and the Savior of the world. Though she was afraid and did not fully understand, Mary humbly answered, “I am the Lord’s servant. May Your word to me be fulfilled.” Her simple faith and obedience made her part of God’s greatest plan.
Soon after, Mary visited her relative Elizabeth, who was also expecting a miraculous child—John the Baptist. When Mary greeted her, the baby in Elizabeth’s womb leaped for joy, and Elizabeth praised Mary for believing God’s promise. Mary responded with a song of praise, called the “Magnificat,” thanking God for His mercy and for choosing her despite her humble background.
When the time came for Jesus to be born, Mary and Joseph traveled to Bethlehem. There, in a stable, she gave birth to her firstborn son and laid Him in a manger. Angels announced the good news to nearby shepherds, who came to see the child and glorify God.
Mary treasured all these things in her heart, reflecting on the wonder of God’s plan unfolding before her. She later brought Jesus to the temple, where Simeon and Anna confirmed that He was the promised Savior.
Mary’s story shows what it means to trust God completely. Though young and ordinary, she believed His word and obeyed with courage. Through her faith, the world received its greatest gift—Jesus Christ, the Savior of all.
