(story told in Luke 1)
Zechariah was a faithful priest who served God in the temple in Jerusalem. He and his wife Elizabeth were righteous and devoted to the Lord, but they carried a deep sorrow—they had no children, and now they were both very old. Still, Zechariah continued to serve and pray, trusting that God’s timing and will were perfect, even when his prayers seemed unanswered.
One day, while Zechariah was chosen to burn incense in the temple, an angel of the Lord appeared before him. The angel said, “Do not be afraid, Zechariah. Your prayer has been heard. Your wife Elizabeth will bear you a son, and you will call him John.” This child would grow up to be John the Baptist, the prophet who would prepare the way for the coming Messiah.
But Zechariah struggled to believe what he heard. He asked how this could happen since both he and his wife were old. Because of his doubt, the angel, who revealed himself as Gabriel, told Zechariah that he would be unable to speak until the promise came true. When he left the temple, the people saw that something extraordinary had happened—Zechariah could only make signs and gestures.
In time, Elizabeth gave birth to a son, just as God had promised. When the baby was born, Zechariah wrote on a tablet, “His name is John.” Immediately, his speech returned, and he began to praise God with joy and thankfulness.
Zechariah’s story reminds us that God’s promises never fail, even when our faith wavers. Through his silence, Zechariah learned that God’s word is always true—and that waiting with trust brings joy when His plan is finally revealed.
