(story told in Luke 19:1-10)
Zacchaeus was a wealthy tax collector who lived in the city of Jericho. Like many tax collectors in his day, he was disliked by his fellow Jews because he worked for the Roman government and often collected more money than required. Though rich, Zacchaeus was not respected or loved—his wealth could not fill the emptiness in his heart. But everything changed the day Jesus came to town.
When Zacchaeus heard that Jesus was passing through Jericho, he wanted to see Him, but the crowd was large, and Zacchaeus was too short to look over them. Determined, he ran ahead and climbed a sycamore tree to get a better view. As Jesus walked by, He looked up, saw Zacchaeus, and called out, “Zacchaeus, come down immediately. I must stay at your house today.” To everyone’s surprise, Jesus chose to spend time with a man others rejected.
The crowd grumbled, wondering why Jesus would visit a sinner’s home. But as Zacchaeus welcomed Jesus joyfully, his heart began to change. He stood up and said, “Look, Lord! I will give half of my possessions to the poor, and if I have cheated anyone, I will pay back four times the amount.” His actions proved his repentance and new faith.
Jesus then said, “Today salvation has come to this house, for the Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost.” In that moment, Zacchaeus’s life was transformed.
Zacchaeus’s story shows that no one is beyond God’s reach. When we respond to Jesus with open hearts and true repentance, He brings forgiveness, joy, and a brand-new start—just as He did for Zacchaeus.
