Matthew 6:19–21 says, “Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal; but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven… For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” Jesus reminds us that what we value most will shape our hearts.
A man once spent years collecting rare and expensive items. He proudly displayed them in his home and guarded them carefully. One day, a storm flooded his house and ruined much of his collection. As he stood in the damage, he realized how quickly the things he prized could disappear.
Many of us quietly build our lives around earthly treasures. We chase money, success, status, or possessions, believing they will give us security. Yet all of these can fade. They are temporary and fragile.
Jesus points us toward a better investment. Treasures in heaven are built through faith, obedience, generosity, and love. When we serve others, forgive freely, and honor God, we store up something eternal that cannot be taken away.
Matthew 6:19–21 invites us to examine our hearts. If our treasure is in temporary things, our hearts will feel anxious and unsteady. But when our treasure is in heaven, our hearts grow steady, peaceful, and full of lasting hope.
