The Lord Is My Shepherd

Psalm 23:1 says, “The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.” In this short verse, David shares a powerful picture of trust and care. He compares God to a shepherd and himself to a sheep. This simple image helps readers understand how God relates to His people.

In Bible times, shepherds watched over their sheep every day. They led them to food and water, protected them from danger, and made sure none were lost. Sheep depended fully on their shepherd. By calling the Lord his shepherd, David shows complete trust in God’s guidance and protection.

The second part of the verse, “I shall not want,” means that with God as his shepherd, David has everything he truly needs. It does not promise wealth or an easy life. Instead, it speaks of contentment and confidence that God will provide what is necessary.

This verse also makes the relationship personal. David says, “my shepherd,” not just “a shepherd.” It shows closeness and belonging. God is not distant or uncaring; He is actively involved in the lives of those who trust Him.

Psalm 23:1 reminds readers that true security comes from relying on God. When He leads, there is no need to live in constant worry or fear.
