Psalm 139:23–24 says, “Search me, O God, and know my heart… See if there is any offensive way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.” These words are a brave and honest prayer.
Imagine someone cleaning out a cluttered attic. For years, boxes were stacked and forgotten. When the light is turned on, dust swirls in the air, and hidden things are suddenly visible. Some items are worth keeping, but others need to be thrown away.
Our hearts can be like that attic. We carry thoughts, motives, and habits that we do not always notice. Sometimes pride, bitterness, or fear quietly settles inside us. Without God’s light, we may not see what needs attention.
Psalm 139:23–24 invites us to let God gently examine us. This is not a prayer of fear, but of trust. We ask Him to reveal what is unhealthy and to guide us toward what is right. He does not search our hearts to shame us, but to heal us.
When we open ourselves to God in this way, growth begins. He clears away what harms us and leads us on a better path. This prayer reminds us that true change starts within, and God is faithful to guide us in the way that lasts forever.
