Respecting Authority

Romans 13:1 says, “Let everyone be subject to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which God has established.” These words encourage believers to think carefully about how they relate to leadership.

Imagine a young driver who feels frustrated by traffic laws. Speed limits seem slow, and stop signs feel unnecessary when the road looks clear. Yet those rules exist for safety and order. Without them, chaos would quickly follow.

In the same way, Romans 13:1 teaches that authority plays a role in maintaining order in society. Governments, leaders, and laws are not perfect, but they serve a purpose. Respecting authority reflects trust that God is ultimately in control.

This does not mean leaders always make wise choices. Still, believers are called to respond with respect, prayer, and integrity rather than rebellion or bitterness. Our attitude reveals our faith.

When we remember that God stands above every earthly power, we find peace. We obey not only because of rules, but because we trust Him. Romans 13:1 reminds us that honoring authority can be an act of worship, showing confidence that God’s greater plan is always at work.
