Nicodemus’s story is told in John 3:1-21; 7:50-52; 19:39-40

Nicodemus – The Curious Pharisee Who Sought the Truth

Sometimes in life, we have big questions we’re afraid to ask out loud. Nicodemus was one of those people. He was a religious leader in Jesus’ time—someone who others looked up to—but he still had questions. His story is found in the Gospel of John and shows us how faith can grow over time.

A Visit in the Night

The first time we meet Nicodemus is in John chapter 3. He comes to visit Jesus, but not during the day—instead, he comes at night. Maybe he didn’t want other people to see him talking to Jesus. After all, Nicodemus was a Pharisee, a group that didn’t always agree with Jesus.

But Nicodemus was curious. He called Jesus a “teacher from God” and wanted to know more. Jesus told him something surprising: “You must be born again.” This confused Nicodemus. How could a grown person be born again?

Jesus explained that He was talking about a spiritual rebirth—starting a new life through faith in God. It was a lot for Nicodemus to take in, but he kept listening.

Speaking Up for Jesus

Later on, in John chapter 7, Nicodemus shows up again. This time, some of the religious leaders are upset with Jesus and want to arrest Him. Nicodemus doesn’t stay silent. He speaks up and says that the law requires them to give Jesus a fair hearing before judging Him.

This might not seem like a big deal, but it was a bold move. Nicodemus was taking a stand, even if it was a quiet one. It showed that his heart was changing.

A Bold Act of Respect

The last time we see Nicodemus is after Jesus dies on the cross (John 19). Many of Jesus’ followers were afraid, but Nicodemus wasn’t. He joined a man named Joseph of Arimathea to bury Jesus. Nicodemus brought a large amount of spices—something people used to honor the dead in those days.

This act was full of love and respect. Nicodemus no longer came at night. He was no longer hiding. He honored Jesus openly, even when it could have been dangerous.

What We Can Learn from Nicodemus

Nicodemus teaches us some powerful lessons:

  • It’s okay to have questions. Faith often starts with curiosity.
  • Growth takes time. Nicodemus didn’t understand everything right away, but he kept seeking the truth.
  • Real faith leads to action. In the end, Nicodemus showed his love for Jesus in a brave and public way.

Nicodemus began as a man with questions in the night and ended as someone who honored Jesus in the light of day. His story reminds us that faith is a journey. We might not have all the answers at first, but if we keep seeking Jesus with an open heart, He will lead us to the truth.
