Moses: The Man Who Led God’s People to Freedom
Have you ever felt like you weren’t good enough for something important? Maybe you thought, “I can’t do that—I’m not ready.” If so, you’ll connect with the story of Moses, one of the most famous people in the Old Testament.
Moses didn’t start out as a confident leader. In fact, he made mistakes and tried to run from responsibility. But God used him in a powerful way to lead His people to freedom. Let’s take a closer look at Moses’ journey and what we can learn from his life.
Who Was Moses?
Moses was born into a Hebrew family in Egypt. At that time, the ruler of Egypt—called Pharaoh—had ordered all Hebrew baby boys to be killed. To save Moses, his mother placed him in a basket and floated it down the river.
Pharaoh’s daughter found the baby and decided to raise him as her own. So Moses grew up in the palace, surrounded by wealth and power. But deep down, he knew he was a Hebrew and cared about his people.
Moses’ Early Mistakes
One day, Moses saw an Egyptian hurting a Hebrew slave. Angry and upset, Moses killed the Egyptian. When he realized people knew what he had done, he ran away to a far-off land called Midian.
There, Moses lived quietly as a shepherd for many years. He probably thought his chance to do something great was long gone. But God had other plans.
God Calls Moses
While Moses was watching sheep one day, he saw something strange—a bush that was on fire but not burning up. When he got closer, God spoke to him from the bush.
God told Moses that He had seen the suffering of His people and wanted Moses to lead them out of slavery in Egypt. Moses was shocked. He didn’t feel ready. He said things like, “I’m not a good speaker” and “What if no one listens to me?”
But God promised to help him and to be with him every step of the way.
Let My People Go
With God’s help, Moses returned to Egypt and told Pharaoh, “Let my people go.” Pharaoh refused. So God sent ten plagues—terrible events like frogs, hail, darkness, and more.
Finally, after the tenth plague, Pharaoh let the people leave. But as they fled, Pharaoh changed his mind and chased after them. That’s when God performed one of the most amazing miracles in the Bible—He parted the Red Sea, and the people walked through on dry ground. When Pharaoh’s army followed, the sea closed back up, and they were stopped.
Leading in the Wilderness
After leaving Egypt, Moses led the Israelites through the desert toward the land God had promised them. But the journey was not easy. The people often complained and disobeyed God.
During this time, God gave Moses the Ten Commandments—important laws to guide the people. Moses spent many years helping the Israelites learn to trust and follow God.
Even though Moses made some mistakes along the way, he stayed faithful. He didn’t get to enter the Promised Land himself, but God allowed him to see it from a mountain before he died.
What We Can Learn from Moses
Moses’ story teaches us some valuable lessons:
- God can use anyone – Even if you feel unqualified, God can work through you.
- Your past doesn’t define you – Moses made big mistakes, but God still had a plan for him.
- Faith takes time – Moses wasn’t bold at first, but he grew stronger as he trusted God.
- Obedience matters – God wants us to listen to Him, even when it’s hard or uncomfortable.
Final Thoughts
Moses’ journey is a powerful reminder that we don’t need to have it all together for God to use us. Like Moses, we might feel afraid, unsure, or even unworthy—but God is patient and faithful. He walks with us and gives us the strength we need.
Reflection Question:
Is there something God might be calling you to do—even if it feels too big or too hard?
You don’t have to be perfect. You just need to say, “Yes, Lord—I’m willing.”
