Mordecai: The Man Who Stood for His People

(story told in the book of Esther)

Mordecai was a Jewish man living in the Persian city of Susa during the time of King Xerxes. After the exile, many Jews remained scattered across foreign lands, and Mordecai was one of them. He raised his cousin Esther as his own daughter after her parents died, teaching her faith and wisdom. Their quiet lives changed when Esther was chosen to become queen of Persia, setting the stage for God’s plan to save His people.

One day, Mordecai uncovered a plot by two guards to kill the king. He told Esther, who warned the king in Mordecai’s name, and the plot was stopped. Later, however, Mordecai refused to bow before Haman, a powerful official in the king’s court. Haman’s pride turned to hatred, and he plotted not only to destroy Mordecai but all the Jews in the empire.

When Mordecai learned of Haman’s evil plan, he tore his clothes and urged Esther to plead with the king for her people. Though it was risky, Esther listened. Mordecai reminded her, “Who knows but that you have come to your royal position for such a time as this?” His faith inspired Esther to act courageously.

Through Esther’s bravery and God’s providence, Haman’s plot was exposed. Haman was executed, and Mordecai was promoted to a position of great honor. He used his authority to protect the Jewish people and help them celebrate their deliverance.

Mordecai’s story shows the power of faith, courage, and wisdom in the face of injustice. He trusted God’s unseen hand at work and stood firm when it mattered most, proving that one person’s integrity can help change the course of a nation.
