Mary of Bethany: A Heart Devoted to Jesus

(story told in Matthew 26:6-13; Mark 14:3-9; Luke 10:38-42; John 11:17-45; 12:1-11)

Mary was the sister of Martha and Lazarus, and she is remembered for her deep love and devotion to Jesus. She lived in the small village of Bethany, just outside Jerusalem, where Jesus often visited. While her sister Martha was busy serving, Mary chose to sit at Jesus’ feet and listen to His teaching. When Martha complained, Jesus gently said that Mary had chosen “what is better,” showing that time spent with Him is the most important thing of all.

Mary’s faith shone brightly when tragedy struck her family. Her brother Lazarus became sick and died before Jesus arrived. When Jesus came to Bethany, Mary fell at His feet, weeping, saying, “Lord, if You had been here, my brother would not have died.” Moved by her grief, Jesus wept too—and then performed a powerful miracle, raising Lazarus from the dead. This moment revealed both Mary’s faith and Jesus’ compassion.

Later, just days before Jesus’ death, Mary showed her love in a remarkable way. During a meal at Simon’s house, she took an expensive jar of perfume and poured it on Jesus’ feet, wiping them with her hair. Some criticized her for wasting something so valuable, but Jesus defended her, saying she had done a beautiful thing in preparation for His burial.

Mary’s actions showed her deep understanding of who Jesus was—the Son of God worthy of her best offering. Her love and humility left a lasting example of worship that came from the heart.

Mary of Bethany reminds us that true devotion isn’t shown through busyness or wealth, but through a heart fully surrendered to Jesus, ready to listen, love, and give without holding back.
