1 John 4:19 says, “We love because He first loved us.” These simple words reveal the starting point of every true act of love. Our love for God and for others is not something we create on our own. It is a response to the love we have already received.
Imagine a small child learning to smile. At first, the smile appears because someone smiled at them. Love often begins that way. It grows in response to kindness, patience, and care. In a greater way, our ability to love grows as we understand how deeply God loves us.
Many people struggle to love well because they feel empty inside. They carry hurt, rejection, or fear. When we forget that we are loved by God, our hearts can become guarded. But when we remember that His love is steady and unconditional, something begins to soften.
God’s love was shown through Jesus—through forgiveness, sacrifice, and grace. When we accept that love personally, it changes how we treat others. We become more patient, more compassionate, and more willing to forgive.
1 John 4:19 reminds us that love is not a burden we must manufacture. It flows from a heart that knows it is already cherished. When we rest in God’s love, we find strength to share that love freely with the world around us.
