Psalm 27:1 begins with a bold declaration: “The Lord is my light and my salvation—whom shall I fear? The Lord is the stronghold of my life—of whom shall I be afraid?” These words were written by David during a time when enemies surrounded him. Yet instead of giving in to fear, he chose trust.
Imagine walking through a dark room at night. Every shadow seems larger than it really is. Your heart beats faster because you cannot clearly see what is ahead. But the moment a light is turned on, the fear begins to fade. The room has not changed, but your vision has.
David calls the Lord his light. Light reveals truth and pushes back darkness. When God guides us, confusion becomes clearer. He also calls the Lord his salvation and stronghold—a safe place of protection. That means safety is not found in perfect circumstances, but in God’s presence.
We all face moments that stir fear—health concerns, financial stress, uncertain futures. Fear is a natural response, but it does not have to control us. When we remember who God is, courage grows in our hearts.
Psalm 27:1 reminds us that God stands between us and our fears. With Him as our light and refuge, we can move forward with confidence, even when the path feels uncertain.
