Joshua’s story is told in the book of Joshua
Joshua: A Brave Leader Who Trusted God
Have you ever had to step up and take on a big responsibility? Maybe you had to lead a team, take care of your family, or face a challenge that felt too big to handle. That’s what happened to a man named Joshua in the Bible.
Joshua followed one of the greatest leaders in history—Moses. After Moses died, God chose Joshua to lead the Israelites into the land He had promised them. It was a huge job, but Joshua did it with courage and trust in God.
Let’s take a look at Joshua’s story and what we can learn from his life.
Who Was Joshua?
Joshua started out as Moses’ helper. He was a strong warrior and a loyal follower of God. When the Israelites left Egypt and were on their way to the Promised Land, Moses sent twelve spies to check out the land. Joshua was one of them.
Most of the spies were afraid and didn’t think they could take the land. But Joshua and another spy named Caleb believed God would help them. They trusted God’s promise, even when others didn’t.
Joshua Becomes Israel’s Leader
After Moses died, it was time for someone new to take the lead. God chose Joshua. That might have been scary—following in Moses’ footsteps was no small task!
But God gave Joshua this powerful message:
“Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid… for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.”
(Joshua 1:9)
God reminded Joshua that he wouldn’t be alone. God would help him every step of the way.
Joshua’s Big Moments as a Leader
Here are some of the most well-known parts of Joshua’s time as leader:
1. Crossing the Jordan River
To enter the Promised Land, the Israelites had to cross the Jordan River. God made a miracle happen—the waters stopped flowing so the people could walk across on dry ground! It was a sign that God was with Joshua, just like He had been with Moses at the Red Sea.
2. The Battle of Jericho
One of Joshua’s most famous victories was at Jericho. God gave strange instructions: walk around the city once a day for six days, and then seven times on the seventh day. After that, blow trumpets and shout. It sounded strange—but Joshua obeyed. And just like God promised, the walls of Jericho fell down.
3. Conquering the Land
Joshua led the people in many battles to take over the land God had promised. He didn’t win because of strong armies, but because he trusted God and followed His commands.
4. Dividing the Land
Once the land was conquered, Joshua helped divide it among the twelve tribes of Israel so each group had their own place to live.
5. Renewing the Covenant
Before Joshua died, he gathered the people and reminded them to stay faithful to God. He told them to choose who they would serve.
His famous words still inspire people today:
“As for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.”
(Joshua 24:15)

Joshua wasn’t perfect, but he showed great qualities:
- He was brave—not because he had no fear, but because he trusted God.
- He was obedient—he followed God’s instructions, even when they didn’t make sense.
- He was faithful—he kept pointing people back to God.
- He was a servant-leader—he led by example and cared about the people.
