(story told in the book of Joshua)
Joshua was Moses’ assistant and the man God chose to lead Israel after Moses’ death. When the people were ready to enter the Promised Land, God told Joshua to be strong and courageous, promising to be with him just as He had been with Moses. Joshua’s mission was to guide the Israelites across the Jordan River and take possession of the land that God had promised to their ancestors.
The first great test came at the city of Jericho. Following God’s unusual instructions, the Israelites marched around the city once a day for six days, and seven times on the seventh day. When the priests blew their trumpets and the people shouted, the walls of Jericho collapsed. The city was taken without a single weapon raised in battle, showing that victory comes through faith and obedience to God.
Joshua continued to lead the Israelites in many battles, conquering kings and cities throughout Canaan. Though they faced challenges and setbacks, God gave them victory when they trusted Him. After the land was secured, Joshua divided it among the twelve tribes so that each would have a home in the land of promise.
Throughout his leadership, Joshua stayed loyal to God. He reminded the people to obey God’s law and avoid worshiping false gods. His faith and courage inspired the nation to remain devoted to the Lord during his lifetime.
Before he died, Joshua gave a final challenge: “Choose this day whom you will serve… but as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.” His life stands as an example of steadfast faith, obedience, and leadership grounded in God’s promises.
