(story told in 1 Kings 16:31-2 Kings 9:37)
Jezebel was a Sidonian princess who became queen of Israel after marrying King Ahab. She was powerful, ambitious, and persuasive—but she used her influence to turn Israel away from the true God. Jezebel worshiped the false god Baal and convinced her husband and the people to do the same. Under her leadership, idolatry and corruption spread across the land, and she became known for her cruelty toward God’s prophets.
One of Jezebel’s most terrible acts was her persecution of those who served the Lord. She ordered the prophets of God to be killed, forcing many to hide in fear. When Elijah the prophet challenged the prophets of Baal on Mount Carmel, Jezebel’s power was tested. God sent fire from heaven to prove He alone was the true God, and Elijah defeated her prophets. Yet even after this miracle, Jezebel refused to repent and vowed to kill Elijah.
Jezebel’s wickedness continued through her schemes and lies. When her husband Ahab wanted Naboth’s vineyard and was refused, Jezebel plotted Naboth’s death so Ahab could take the land. God sent Elijah to pronounce judgment, saying her evil would not go unpunished.
Years later, Jezebel met the end Elijah had foretold. When her son Joram was king, the commander Jehu rebelled against the royal family. Jezebel tried to face him proudly from her window, but Jehu ordered her to be thrown down. She died violently, and her body was left to be eaten by dogs, fulfilling God’s word.
Jezebel’s story is a sobering reminder of what happens when pride and rebellion rule the heart. Her life warns us that power without righteousness leads to destruction—but also shows that God’s justice always prevails in the end.
