James: The Disciple of Courage and Faith

(story is told throughout the Gospels)

James, the son of Zebedee, was one of Jesus’ twelve disciples and the brother of John. Together, they were fishermen by trade, working along the Sea of Galilee when Jesus called them. When Jesus said, “Follow Me,” James and John immediately left their nets and their father to become His followers. Their quick response showed their willingness to leave everything behind to serve God’s greater purpose.

James was part of Jesus’ inner circle, along with Peter and John. These three witnessed some of the most powerful moments in Jesus’ ministry. They were present when Jesus raised Jairus’s daughter from the dead, when He was transfigured on the mountain in glory, and when He prayed in deep sorrow in the Garden of Gethsemane. Through these experiences, James saw both the power and the compassion of the Son of God.

James and his brother were known for their passion and strong personalities. Jesus even nicknamed them “Sons of Thunder,” reflecting their fiery spirit. Once, they asked Jesus for special places of honor in His kingdom, but Jesus reminded them that greatness in God’s kingdom comes through humility and service, not power or position.

After Jesus’ resurrection and ascension, James continued to spread the gospel with boldness. His faith and courage made him a key leader in the early church, though it also brought persecution. He became the first of the apostles to die for his faith, executed by King Herod for following Jesus.

James’s life reminds us that following Christ requires both passion and humility. He learned that true greatness comes from serving others and standing firm in faith, even when it costs everything.
