(story told in Matthew 9:18-26; Mark 5:21-43; Luke 8:40-56)
Jairus was a respected leader in the synagogue, a man of faith and responsibility in his community. But when his young daughter became gravely ill, his position and status no longer mattered—he was simply a desperate father seeking help. Hearing about Jesus, Jairus hurried to find Him, fell at His feet, and pleaded, “My little daughter is dying. Please come and lay Your hands on her so she will live.” His humble faith showed that he trusted Jesus completely.
As Jesus went with Jairus, a large crowd followed, slowing their progress. Along the way, a woman who had been sick for twelve years touched Jesus’ robe and was healed instantly. While Jesus paused to speak with her, Jairus received devastating news: his daughter had died. But Jesus turned to him and said, “Don’t be afraid; just believe.” Those words gave Jairus courage to keep walking with Jesus, even when hope seemed gone.
When they reached the house, mourners were already weeping. Jesus told them the girl was not dead but only sleeping, and the crowd laughed at Him. Yet Jesus entered the room, took the child’s hand, and said, “Little girl, get up.” At once, she stood and began to walk. Jairus’s faith was rewarded with a miracle no one could deny.
In that quiet moment, Jesus showed His power over death and His compassion for the brokenhearted. Jairus’s story reminds us that faith holds on even when hope seems lost.
Jairus teaches us that true belief means trusting Jesus through delays, doubts, and despair—because in His presence, even the impossible becomes possible.
