Ishmael: The Son Not Forgotten

Sometimes life doesn’t go the way we expect. Plans change, mistakes happen, and people can feel left out or forgotten. But the story of Ishmael in the Bible shows us that even when things go wrong, God still sees, hears, and cares.

Let’s take a closer look at Ishmael’s life and what it teaches us.

The Birth of Ishmael

God had promised Abraham that he would have many descendants. But as the years passed, Abraham and his wife Sarah still didn’t have a child. They grew old waiting for God’s promise.

Out of frustration and impatience, Sarah came up with her own plan. She told Abraham to have a child with her servant, Hagar. In those days, this was something people sometimes did to try and build a family.

Hagar became pregnant and gave birth to Ishmael—Abraham’s first son.

But soon, problems began. Sarah grew jealous of Hagar, and there was tension in the household. Ishmael was caught in the middle.

God’s Promise and Ishmael’s Future

Later, God made it clear that the special child He had promised would come through Sarah, not Hagar. That child would be Isaac.

Even so, God didn’t forget Ishmael. In fact, He gave a promise for Ishmael too:

“I will bless him… and he will become the father of twelve rulers, and I will make him into a great nation.” (Genesis 17:20)

God cared about Ishmael and had a plan for his life. His name, Ishmael, means “God hears.” And that name would prove to be true.

Hagar and Ishmael in the Wilderness

When Isaac was born, the tension between Sarah and Hagar grew even stronger. Sarah asked Abraham to send Hagar and Ishmael away.

So Abraham gave them some food and water, and they left.

Alone in the hot desert, the water ran out. Hagar thought they were going to die. She placed Ishmael under a bush and sat a little distance away, crying.

But God heard.

“God heard the boy crying, and the angel of God called to Hagar from heaven…” (Genesis 21:17)

God showed Hagar a well of water and promised that Ishmael would grow up to become a great nation. God saved them—and reminded them they were not forgotten.

Ishmael’s Legacy

Ishmael grew up in the wilderness and became a skilled archer. He later married and had twelve sons, who became leaders of their own tribes (Genesis 25:13–16).

Although Ishmael wasn’t the child through whom God’s promise to Abraham would continue, he was still deeply cared for by God. His descendants became a large and important people group.

Lessons from Ishmael’s Story

Ishmael’s life may not have followed the plan anyone expected, but it shows us some powerful truths:

  • God hears us when we cry out, especially in hard times.
  • Even when we feel forgotten or left out, God still has a plan for us.
  • God cares about everyone, not just the main characters in the story.
  • There’s no place too far or too lonely for God to reach us.

Final Thoughts

Ishmael’s story is one of pain, waiting, and being pushed aside—but also of hope, rescue, and blessing. He may not have been the “chosen son,” but he was still loved by God.

Maybe you’ve felt overlooked at times. Maybe things in your life didn’t go the way you planned. If so, remember Ishmael’s story.

God hears you. God sees you. And God has not forgotten you.
