(story told in 1 Samuel 17)
Goliath was a mighty warrior from the Philistine army, famous for his enormous size and strength. He stood over nine feet tall and wore heavy armor that made him seem unstoppable. Day after day, he came out to challenge the Israelites, shouting insults and daring anyone to fight him. His words filled Israel’s army with fear—no one was brave enough to face the giant.
Then came David, a young shepherd sent by his father to bring food to his brothers in the army. When David heard Goliath mocking God and His people, he was shocked that no one stood up to him. David volunteered to fight, trusting not in weapons or strength but in the power of the living God. Even King Saul doubted him, but David’s faith gave him courage.
Refusing armor or a sword, David went to face Goliath with only a sling and five smooth stones. Goliath laughed at him, but David declared, “You come against me with sword and spear, but I come against you in the name of the Lord Almighty.” Then he slung a stone that struck Goliath in the forehead, and the giant fell to the ground.
With one act of faith, David defeated the enemy everyone else feared. The Israelites cheered and chased away the Philistines, and David’s victory brought glory to God.
Goliath’s story reminds us that no matter how big the challenge, God’s power is greater. Strength and size cannot stand against faith and obedience. The battle belongs to the Lord, and those who trust Him can overcome even the greatest giants.
