Gehazi: The Servant Who Chose Greed Over Faith

(story told in 2 Kings 4:11-8:6)

Gehazi was the servant of the prophet Elisha and witnessed many of the amazing miracles God performed through him. He saw the dead raised to life, food multiplied to feed the hungry, and lepers healed—all signs of God’s great power and mercy. Gehazi had the privilege of learning from one of God’s greatest prophets, but his heart eventually turned away from the faith and humility that marked Elisha’s ministry.

One of Gehazi’s most memorable moments came after the healing of Naaman, the commander from Syria who was cured of leprosy. Elisha refused to accept any gifts from Naaman, showing that God’s healing was an act of grace, not something to be bought. But Gehazi could not resist the temptation of wealth. He secretly ran after Naaman, lied to him, and took silver and clothing for himself.

When Gehazi returned, Elisha confronted him, revealing that nothing was hidden from God. Because of his greed and deceit, Elisha declared that Naaman’s leprosy would cling to Gehazi and his descendants forever. In an instant, Gehazi’s desire for riches cost him his health, his honor, and his place in God’s work.

Later, Gehazi is seen speaking with the king of Israel, recounting the miracles Elisha had performed. This suggests he may have been seeking mercy or restoration, but the Bible does not say whether his heart truly changed.

Gehazi’s story is a warning about the danger of greed and dishonesty. Even those close to God’s work can fall if they chase after selfish desires. His life reminds us that integrity and obedience are far more valuable than any earthly reward.
