Day 173: Jesus Heals a Government Official’s Son

*John 4:43-54

Jesus heals the son of a royal official from afar, demonstrating his power to heal and leading the official and his household to believe.

  • Return to Galilee:
    • After His encounter with the Samaritan woman, Jesus leaves Sychar and returns to Galilee.
  • Reception in Galilee:
    • Jesus arrives in Galilee, where the people welcome Him, having seen the signs He performed in Jerusalem during the Passover feast.
  • Royal Official’s Plea:
    • A royal official from Capernaum hears that Jesus has come from Judea to Galilee and travels to Him, pleading for Jesus to come and heal his son, who is close to death.
  • Jesus’ Response:
    • Jesus tells the official, “Unless you see signs and wonders you will not believe.”
  • Official’s Persistency:
    • The official implores Jesus, saying, “Sir, come down before my child dies.”
  • Assurance of Healing:
    • Jesus responds, “Go; your son will live.”
    • The official believes Jesus’ words and begins his journey back to Capernaum.
  • Confirmation of Healing:
    • On his way home, the official’s servants meet him and inform him that his son is alive and well.
    • When the official inquires about the time of his son’s recovery, he realizes that it coincides with the moment Jesus assured him of his son’s healing.
  • Faith Response:
    • The official and his whole household believe in Jesus as a result of this miraculous sign.
  • Second Sign in Cana:
    • This healing in Capernaum is the second sign that Jesus performs upon coming to Galilee, following the miracle of turning water into wine in Cana.

John 4:43-54 teaches us to have faith in Jesus, even when we don’t see immediate results. A royal official came to Jesus, asking Him to heal his sick son. Instead of going with him, Jesus simply said the boy would live—and the man believed. This reminds us to trust Jesus’ words, even when we don’t see instant proof. Faith means believing in His power and promises, knowing that He is always working for our good, even when we can’t see it right away.

John 4:43-54 (WEB)

4:43 After the two days he went out from there and went into Galilee. 44 For Jesus himself testified that a prophet has no honor in his own country. 45 So when he came into Galilee, the Galileans received him, having seen all the things that he did in Jerusalem at the feast, for they also went to the feast. 46 Jesus came therefore again to Cana of Galilee, where he made the water into wine. There was a certain nobleman whose son was sick at Capernaum. 47 When he heard that Jesus had come out of Judea into Galilee, he went to him and begged him that he would come down and heal his son, for he was at the point of death. 48 Jesus therefore said to him, “Unless you see signs and wonders, you will in no way believe.”
49 The nobleman said to him, “Sir, come down before my child dies.”
50 Jesus said to him, “Go your way. Your son lives.” The man believed the word that Jesus spoke to him, and he went his way. 51 As he was going down, his servants met him and reported, saying “Your child lives!” 52 So he inquired of them the hour when he began to get better. They said therefore to him, “Yesterday at the seventh hour, the fever left him.” 53 So the father knew that it was at that hour in which Jesus said to him, “Your son lives.” He believed, as did his whole house. 54 This is again the second sign that Jesus did, having come out of Judea into Galilee.
