Daniel

Daniel’s story is told in the book of Daniel

  • Who is Daniel?
    • Born into a Judean noble or royal family.
    • Exiled to Babylon as a young man when King Nebuchadnezzar conquered Jerusalem.
    • Began as a captive, trained to serve the Babylonian king.
    • Rose to prominence as an advisor, dream interpreter, and eventually a high-ranking official.
  • Strengths and Accomplishments
    • Interpreted King Nebuchadnezzar’s dreams, saving his fellow wise men from execution.
    • Advised multiple kings over the years, showing unparalleled wisdom.
    • Refused to compromise his religious beliefs, even under threat of death.
    • His faith led him to pray openly, even when a law was passed to execute anyone who prayed to any god other than the king. Spoiler: He survived a night in the lions’ den because of this.
    • Known for his exemplary character, unmatched among the officials.
    • Led without corruption, leading to long-term influence over two empires (Babylon and Medo-Persia).
  • Weaknesses and Mistakes
    • While Daniel doesn’t make blatant mistakes, his openness in practicing his faith could be seen as naive, especially given the political climate. It got him thrown into a lions’ den!
    • Daniel is strangely absent from some of the Babylonian historical narratives, like the fiery furnace story with his friends Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego.
  • Lessons from His Life
    • Never Compromise Your Beliefs: Even under the threat of death, Daniel held firm in his faith.
    • Wisdom and Integrity Go a Long Way: His wisdom was not just intellectual but also moral. This led to a long-lasting legacy.
    • Power of Prayer: Daniel prayed three times a day, which was a cornerstone of his strength and resilience.
  • Key Verses (NIV Version)
    • Daniel 1:17 – “To these four young men God gave knowledge and understanding of all kinds of literature and learning. And Daniel could understand visions and dreams of all kinds.”
    • Daniel 6:10 – “Now when Daniel learned that the decree had been published, he went home to his upstairs room where the windows opened toward Jerusalem. Three times a day he got down on his knees and prayed, giving thanks to his God, just as he had done before.”
    • Daniel 6:22 – “My God sent his angel, and he shut the mouths of the lions. They have not hurt me, because I was found innocent in his sight. Nor have I ever done any wrong before you, Your Majesty.”
