Courage for the Journey

Joshua 1:9 gives a strong command and a comforting promise: “Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.” These words were spoken to Joshua as he prepared to lead the people into a new land.

Imagine stepping into a leadership role after a great and respected leader has passed away. That was Joshua’s situation after Moses. The responsibility was heavy, and the path ahead was unknown. Fear would have been a natural response. Yet God did not focus on the size of the challenge. He focused on His presence.

God’s command to be strong and courageous was not based on Joshua’s skill alone. It was rooted in the promise, “I will be with you.” Courage grows when we remember we are not facing life by ourselves. God’s presence changes how we see obstacles.

We may not be leading a nation, but we all face new seasons—new jobs, new responsibilities, unexpected changes. At times, the future feels overwhelming. This verse reminds us that fear does not have the final word.

Joshua 1:9 invites us to step forward with confidence. When we trust that God walks beside us, we can face each new chapter with strength and steady hope.
