(story told in 2 Samuel 3:3; 13-19)
Absalom was one of King David’s sons, known for his striking appearance and charm. The Bible says there was no one in Israel as handsome as Absalom, and his long hair became a symbol of his pride. But beneath his beauty and confidence grew anger and ambition that would eventually tear his family apart.
Absalom’s bitterness began after his sister Tamar was violated by their brother Amnon. When King David failed to punish Amnon, Absalom took justice into his own hands. Two years later, he arranged for Amnon’s death during a feast, then fled to another land to escape his father’s wrath. Though David loved Absalom, their relationship was broken for several years.
Eventually, Absalom returned to Jerusalem, but David refused to see him at first. When they finally reunited, peace did not last long. Absalom secretly began winning the hearts of the people by acting as a kind and fair judge. After gaining enough followers, he declared himself king and led a rebellion against his father. David, heartbroken, fled the city to avoid a bloody conflict.
A battle followed between Absalom’s forces and David’s loyal soldiers. During the fight, Absalom’s hair caught in the branches of a tree as he rode beneath it, leaving him hanging helplessly. Joab, David’s general, found him and killed him despite David’s command to spare his son.
When David heard of Absalom’s death, he wept bitterly, crying, “O my son Absalom! My son, my son Absalom!” Absalom’s story is one of wasted potential and broken love. His pride and rebellion brought ruin, reminding us that true honor and strength come from humility, forgiveness, and obedience to God.
