Christ Above All (Colossians 1:1–4:18)
In Colossians, Paul writes to remind believers that Jesus is greater than anything else in the world. He explains that Jesus is the visible image of the invisible God and that everything was created through Him and for Him. Jesus holds all things together, and through His death on the cross, He brings peace and forgiveness to everyone who believes. Christ is the center of the Christian faith.
Paul encourages the Colossians not to be distracted by false teachings or human traditions. Some people tried to add extra rules and spiritual practices, claiming they were necessary for salvation. Paul firmly teaches that Jesus is enough. Believers are complete in Christ, and no other power or ritual can save them or make them more acceptable to God.
Because they belong to Jesus, Paul urges the believers to live differently. They should put aside sinful behaviors like anger, lying, and selfishness. Instead, they should show compassion, kindness, humility, patience, and love. These qualities reflect the new life that Christ has given them.
Paul also gives guidance for relationships in the home and community. He encourages husbands and wives to love and respect each other, children to obey their parents, and workers to serve faithfully. All actions should be done in the name of the Lord, with gratitude in their hearts.
Paul closes by reminding the church to stay devoted to prayer and share the message of Jesus with others. Colossians teaches that Christ is supreme over all creation and over our lives. Because Jesus is above everything, we can trust Him completely and live every day to honor Him.
