Justice, Mercy, and Humility (Micah 1:1–7:20)
The prophet Micah was sent by God to speak to the people of Israel and Judah during a time of injustice and idolatry. The rich and powerful were taking land and homes from the poor, and leaders were accepting bribes instead of doing what was right. Micah warned that God would bring judgment because the nation had turned away from Him and mistreated others.
Micah also confronted false prophets who spoke lies to please people instead of delivering God’s truth. Though the future looked dark, God promised that He would restore His people. One of the most famous prophecies in Micah foretold that a ruler would come from Bethlehem—pointing to the birth of Jesus, the promised Messiah who would bring peace.
God reminded His people what He truly desired from them. Instead of empty sacrifices, He called them to live out their faith every day. Micah 6:8 summarizes God’s expectation clearly: “To act justly, to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God.” These three qualities show what a life pleasing to God looks like in both heart and actions.
Even though judgment was coming, Micah encouraged the people to put their hope in God. He promised that God would shepherd His people like a loving leader and bring them back to their land. God would forgive their sins and show compassion, throwing their wrongdoings into the depths of the sea.
Micah ends with praise, celebrating God’s unfailing love and faithfulness. The book reminds us that God desires justice, kindness, and humility from His people—and He stands ready to forgive and restore all who return to Him.
