(story told in Colossians 4:9)
Onesimus was a slave from the city of Colossae who belonged to a man named Philemon, a Christian and friend of the apostle Paul. For reasons not fully known, Onesimus ran away from his master and likely took some of his possessions. His journey eventually led him to Rome, where he crossed paths with Paul, who was imprisoned there. What began as a story of escape turned into one of redemption and new life.
While in Rome, Onesimus met Paul and heard the message of Jesus Christ. Through Paul’s teaching and friendship, Onesimus came to faith and was transformed. His name, which means “useful,” took on new meaning as he became a devoted helper to Paul, assisting him in his ministry even while Paul was in chains.
Paul grew to love Onesimus like a son and wanted to do what was right. He wrote a letter to Philemon, asking him to receive Onesimus back—not as a slave, but as a brother in Christ. Paul also mentioned Onesimus in his letter to the Colossians, calling him “our faithful and dear brother, who is one of you.” This showed how deeply Paul trusted and respected him.
Though we don’t know exactly what happened afterward, Paul’s appeal reflected the power of the gospel to change hearts and relationships. Onesimus was no longer defined by his past but by his new identity in Jesus.
Onesimus’s story reminds us that God’s grace can reach anyone, anywhere. Through faith, we are no longer bound by our mistakes but set free to serve with love, forgiveness, and purpose in Christ.
