Peter: The Fisherman Who Became a Rock

(story told in the Gospels and the book of Acts)

Peter, also known as Simon, was a fisherman from Galilee when Jesus called him to be one of His first disciples. Jesus met Peter while he was working by the sea and said, “Follow Me, and I will make you a fisher of men.” Without hesitation, Peter left his nets behind to follow Jesus. Though ordinary by the world’s standards, Peter’s bold heart and deep faith would make him a key leader in God’s plan.

Throughout Jesus’ ministry, Peter was often the first to speak and act. He witnessed many miracles—Jesus walking on water, calming storms, and healing the sick. When Jesus asked His disciples, “Who do you say I am?” Peter answered, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.” Jesus praised him for this faith and said, “You are Peter, and on this rock I will build My church.”

But Peter’s faith was also tested. On the night Jesus was arrested, Peter denied knowing Him three times, just as Jesus had foretold. When the rooster crowed, Peter realized what he had done and wept bitterly. Yet Jesus’ love for him never changed. After His resurrection, Jesus appeared to Peter and gently restored him, telling him three times, “Feed My sheep,” showing forgiveness and trust.

Empowered by the Holy Spirit, Peter became a bold preacher after Jesus’ ascension. He shared the good news of Christ to thousands and became a leader in the early church.

Peter’s story is one of faith, failure, and forgiveness. He reminds us that God can use imperfect people who are willing to follow Him. Even when we stumble, His grace restores us and gives us strength to stand firm in faith.
