Athaliah: The Queen Who Tried to Destroy a Promise

(story told in 2 Kings 8:16-11:20; 2 Chronicles 22:10-24:7)

Athaliah was the daughter of King Ahab and Queen Jezebel, and like her parents, she followed the path of idolatry and cruelty. She married Jehoram, king of Judah, and when her son Ahaziah became king, she continued to influence the royal family toward worshiping false gods. But when Ahaziah was killed, Athaliah seized the throne for herself—something no woman in Judah had done before.

To secure her power, Athaliah committed a terrible act. She ordered the death of all the royal heirs, her own grandchildren, so that no one could challenge her rule. It seemed her plan had succeeded, but one baby—Joash, the son of Ahaziah—was secretly rescued by his aunt Jehosheba and hidden in the temple of the Lord. For six years, Athaliah ruled over Judah, unaware that the rightful heir was alive and growing under the care of the priest Jehoiada.

In the seventh year, Jehoiada gathered trusted soldiers and revealed young Joash to them. Together, they anointed him king in the temple and proclaimed, “Long live the king!” When Athaliah heard the noise, she rushed to the temple and saw the boy wearing the crown. Realizing her reign was over, she cried out “Treason!” but was quickly captured and executed outside the temple.

After Athaliah’s death, Jehoiada led the people to renew their covenant with God. They tore down the temple of Baal and restored true worship in Jerusalem.

Athaliah’s story is a warning about pride and rebellion. She tried to destroy God’s plan, but His promise endured. Her downfall reminds us that no human power can stop what God has promised to fulfill.
