1 John: Walking in Light, Love, and Life

Live in God’s Love (1 John 1:1–5:21)

In 1 John, the apostle John writes to help believers be confident in their faith. He begins by reminding them that Jesus is real—God in human form—whom he and others saw, heard, and touched. Because Jesus came to bring forgiveness and eternal life, believers can have a close relationship with God and with one another. Walking with God means living in the light and turning away from sin.

John teaches that confessing our sins is important. When we admit our wrongs, God is faithful to forgive us and cleanse us completely. Jesus is our advocate—He stands before God on our behalf. Believers show they truly know God when they obey His commands and follow Jesus’ example.

A major theme in 1 John is love. John says that God is love, and anyone who is born of God should love others. God showed the greatest love by sending His Son to die for us. Because of this, we are called to love not just in words but in actions—helping those in need, showing kindness, and forgiving others. Love is evidence that God’s Spirit is working in us.

John also warns about false teachers who deny that Jesus is the Son of God. Believers must test what they hear and remain faithful to what they have been taught. God’s Spirit gives confidence and helps us recognize the truth.

The letter ends by assuring believers that they have eternal life through Jesus. John encourages them to pray, avoid sin, and stay away from idols. 1 John teaches that real faith is seen through obedience, truth, and especially love—because those who live in God’s love show that they belong to Him.
