Elisha

*Elisha’s story is told in 1 Kings 19:16-2 Kings 13:20

Who is Elisha?

  • Background and Call: Elisha was the son of Shaphat, a farmer from Abel-meholah in Israel. He was plowing his field when the prophet Elijah threw his cloak onto him, symbolizing his call to be a prophet.
  • The Protégé of Elijah: Before taking up the prophetic mantle, Elisha served Elijah faithfully. Their bond was so deep that when Elijah was about to be taken up to heaven, Elisha refused to leave his side.

Strengths and Accomplishments

  • Double Portion of Elijah’s Spirit: Before Elijah’s departure, Elisha asked for a double portion of his spirit. His request was granted, leading to a life filled with twice as many recorded miracles.
  • Miracles: Some of the notable miracles include purifying the waters of Jericho, multiplying a widow’s oil, raising a boy from the dead, and healing Naaman of leprosy.
  • Defending Israel: God used Elisha to provide guidance to the kings of Israel, helping them in their wars and decisions.
  • School of Prophets: Elisha expanded and influenced the prophetic community, better known as the “sons of the prophets.”

Weaknesses and Mistakes

  • Gehazi’s Greed: Although not directly Elisha’s mistake, he had to deal with his servant Gehazi’s deceit and greed when he went behind Elisha’s back to accept gifts from Naaman.
  • Elisha’s Curse: In a moment of anger, Elisha cursed some youths for mocking him, resulting in two bears coming out of the woods and mauling them.

Lessons from His Life

  • Faithfulness Pays: Elisha’s life demonstrates that diligence and loyalty, especially in times of apprenticeship, lead to greater responsibilities and blessings.
  • The Power of Prayer: His miracles weren’t just random acts but outcomes of deep prayers and trust in God.
  • God’s Provision: Elisha’s life serves as a testament to God’s inexhaustible provision, whether it’s a jar of oil or a strategic battle plan.
